Essential Oils

Essential oils are the important part of a plant that makes them smell the way they are. Once you boil a plant, it takes away much of the healing aspects. Essential oils are extremely concentrated. For instance, it takes around 16 pounds of peppermint leaves to make 1 ounce of the essential oil. These oils contain active ingredients and additives that are used in many household products such as shampoos, soaps, skin creams, toothpaste, mouthwash, cleaning products and lip balms. Essential oils also give you flavor and aroma that are added to the spices which you use for everyday cooking such as nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. Other oils used for cooking include oregano, basil and thyme.

Essential oils are also used for therapeutic uses. For example, if you have an upset stomach, just take a cup of hot water and add two drops of peppermint oil for fast stomach relief. For a quick energy boost, take about a fourth teaspoon of lavender with 6 tablespoons of almond oil and rub it into your skin for an instant energy boost.

Some essential oils are extremely toxic and some are even highly toxic when ingested internally. These must be used with extreme caution or under the guidance of a skilled herbalist or aromatherapist. Wormseed is normally used to get rid of intestinal worms. This essential oil must be used with caution because it is highly toxic. Wintergreen contains a toxic chemical that is made from the same class of aspirin chemicals. Many people use this oil to help relieve the pain of arthritis.
