When you think of DNA, you probably imagine the double helix: two strands intertwining with one another. Well, you may not know each of these strands have different names and perform different tasks. One is called sense and the other is known as antisense. Researchers discovered long ago that the antisense strand is in charge for telling the body how to code for protein.

Now, that sounds pretty significant as it is, but consider the ramifications of such a job. This occupation means that antisense can make some genes refuse to express themselves. Think about it this way. You know how some people blame certain conditions on “bad genes”? While they may be making up excuses, sometimes they’re absolutely right. So imagine what would happen if there was a technology that could make those genes stop working against the individual. Countless conditions could be cured or otherwise eradicated.

While genetics may not seem like the most interesting field in the world, it really should be. Thanks to technology like the types surrounding antisense, geneticists could cure all types of issues.
